Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Hypnotherapist?

A Hypnotherapist is a skilled and trained caring professional who helps a client use their own powerful mind and imagination to increase motivation or change self-limiting behavioural patterns or neuroses by inducing a trance state. Once in the hypnotic state, the Hypnotherapist will use individual suggestions and techniques specific to the client’s problem.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a totally naturally occurring condition, and is simply a profoundly comfortable and deeply relaxed state during which the client can easily and sensibly communicate with the therapist. The hypnotic state has been likened to the dreamy relaxed state that we all drop into just prior to falling asleep or upon waking up. It is quite beautiful, it is quite safe.

How does it feel to be hypnotised?

Actually there is no ‘one’ specific sensation of feeling hypnotised and it seems to be slightly different for almost everyone. The nearest description that I can offer is one of being in deep relaxation whilst remaining fully aware, often acutely so. Occasionally your hands, arms or legs will feel heavy or enlarged and there will often be a compression of time whereby 50 minutes feels like 20.

Can you make anyone do something they don’t want to?

No, absolutely not. As I mentioned elsewhere, hypnosis is a ‘consent state’ which simply means that you will not do anything that you do not want to do.

Is it safe?

Yes, absolutely. It is a completely safe, reliable and gentle therapeutic technique that is centuries old. The thing to remember is that hypnosis is a ‘consent state’ and therefore you remain in control and aware at all times. There is no loss of consciousness associated with it, and the person in Hypnosis remains fully aware of themselves and the therapist and will retain an accurate memory of the entire session thereafter.

Is it good for performance enhancement?

Definitely! Hypnotherapy can really aid performance. It can help and enhance sporting performance, career development, presentation skills, and stage performance to name but a few.

Does it always work?

As with all medicines and therapies, whether complimentary or conventional, a course of hypnotherapy treatments cannot guarantee success. However, the truth is that Hypnotherapy is a very effective form of therapy and can help in most cases.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Virtually everyone. Of course there are always exceptions, but these are generally restricted to a small minority of individuals, for instance those suffering with psychoses, or who have severe learning difficulties, perhaps suffering from senility, the very young children and drug addicts.

What is the difference between Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy makes changes to the subconscious by using the understanding and imagery of the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy on the other hand attempts to bypass the conscious mind and work directly with the subconscious. Generally Hypnotherapy will yield results far more quickly than with psychotherapy or counselling.

How long does a treatment take?

It depends on too many variables to answer this accurately. It can be as short as a single session for a simple problem or something like smoking cessation, or between three and ten for a more difficult issue. You can rest assured however, that a professional therapist such as Lee Tiller will never keep a client in therapy longer than is absolutely necessary.

How do I train to become a Hypnotherapist?

There are many reputable hypnotherapy training organisations across the UK and Ireland. However, as with any major investment of your time and money, it is important to research your market thoroughly. Contact a few professional Hypnotherapists for their impartial advice.

Personally Lee wholeheartedly recommends the Essex Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy (EICH) for their impeccably presented professional practitioner training programme. The EICH is headed up by Mr Terence Watts, one of the leading and perhaps most eminent Hypnotherapists practising in the UK today.
